Chapter Eighteen

“Can you believe that they seemed to think the chicken was anything but a dumb bird?” Liv asked Rory as they exited the barbeque restaurant.

He shrugged, squinting in the afternoon sun as hot wind blasted them in the face. “What did you do with her?”

Liv searched the area, certain that the bird should be close by. The space around the crate where she’d left the chicken was empty, save for a tumbleweed that had blown in. “I thought she was here. I told her not to go anywhere.”

Rory stomped past the crates and around the building. Liv followed, hearing gentle clucking. When they came around the restaurant, she noticed that the wind wasn’t as strong back there, partially blocked by the structure. The clucking grew louder, and on the other side of a rusted old truck was the source of the sound. Liv gave her giant friend a curious stare and took off to find out what the chicken was doing.

When she peeked around the corner, she found a sight she hadn’t expected. The chicken was scratching at the dirt with her beak like before, but she wasn’t making nonsensical marks, as Liv would have expected. Instead, she’d sketched out a series of what appeared to be complex equations. When the chicken saw Liv and Rory, she squawked loudly.

Liv and Rory both froze, staring with wide eyes at the equations written in the dirt.

“So you still think it’s unlikely that she’s a real person spelled to be a chicken?” Rory asked.

“I mean, in all honesty, she’s the first chicken I’ve ever been around,” Liv admitted. “Maybe they all act this bizarrely.”

“She’s not the first I’ve been around,” Rory stated. “None that I’ve known do math, let alone calculus.”

Liv tilted her head to the side, trying to make out the equations written in the dirt. “This looks like scientific stuff. Like physics or something.”

Rory agreed with a nod. He brandished his finger at the chicken, but nothing happened.

“Trying to undo the spell she may or may not be under?” Liv asked.

He nodded. “Yes, but it’s not working.”

“Let me try it,” Liv said, pointing at the chicken. Nothing happened. “Okay, well, I guess we have to take her with us. But I can’t look into whatever mess she’s wrapped up in right now. I’ve got to return the magical tech to Papa Creola.”

“I agree,” Rory declared. “Vampires are more important. I can keep her for a little while, but if she is in fact trouble, I don’t want to have her for that long.”

The chicken protested with a series of loud clucks.

Liv stuck her hands on her hips, glaring down at the bird. “Hey, the world can’t revolve around you, but we are trying to help, Dorothy!”

The squawk that spilled from the animal’s beak almost sounded like a “no.”

Liv gave Rory a sideways glance. “Okay, her name isn’t Dorothy.”

He shook his head and picked up the chicken. “Why did you tell them we might want to return here?”

“Isn’t it obvious?” Liv asked.
